Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves the chronic inflammation of all or part of the digestive tract. Two of these diseases are:
An inflammatory disease that affects the upper layers of the lumen of the large intestine (the colon). A few symptoms are diarrhoea, weight loss, fever and the presence of blood in the stool. In serious cases, it results in the removal of the colon and the placement of a stoma. Perforation, heavy bleeding, thrombosis and colon cancer are also among the possible consequences.
An inflammatory disease that affects the entire gastrointestinal tract and especially the lower layers of the intestinal lumen. Inflammatory intestinal diseases are often painful and debilitating. Timely and appropriate treatment is essential.
